I

La morte è qui, la morte è là,
la morte è attiva ovunque,
intorno, dentro, sotto,
sopra è la morte - noi siamo la morte.


Death is here and death is there,
Death is busy everywhere,
all around, within, beneath,
above is death - and we are death.



II

La morte ha marchiato e suggellato
tutto ciò che siamo e sentiamo,
tutto ciò che sappiamo e temiamo.

Death has set his mark and seal
on all we are and all we feel,
on all we know and all we fear.

Muoiono per primi i piaceri - poi
le speranze, indi le paure - e quando
anch'esse sono morte, il debito è pagato,
polvere chiede polvere - e moriamo noi pure

First our pleasures die - and then
our hopes, and then our fears - and when
these are dead, the debt is due,
dust claims dust - and we die too.

Tutte le cose che amiamo e abbiamo care,
come noi devono languire e perire;
tale è la nostra dura sorte di mortali -
l'amore stesso perirebbe se loro non perissero.

All things that we love and cherish
like ourselves must fade and perish;
such is our rude mortal lot -
love itself would, did they not.
