Filosofia dell'amore

Basata su un canto di Anacreonte; si presume scritta nell'autunno del 1819.


I

Si fondono al fiume le fonti
e i fiumi con l'Oceano,
i venti del Cielo si uniscono in eterno
con dolce emozione;
niente in questo mondo è solo;
tutte le cose per legge divina
in un unico spirito si incontrano e si fondono.
Perchè non io col tuo spirito?

Vedi le montagne che baciano il Cielo
e le onde che si allacciano;
nessun fiore gemello sarebbe perdonato
se disdegnasse il fratello;
e il sole abbraccia la terra,
e il raggio della Luna bacia il mare:
che senso ha questa dolce fatica
se tu non baci me?

The fountains mingle with the river
and the rivers with the Ocean,
the winds of Heaven mix for ever
with a sweet emotion;
nothing in the world is single;
all thing by a law divine
in one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?

See the mountains kiss high Heaven
and the waves clasp one another;
no sister-flower would be forgiven
if it disdained its brother;
and the sunlight clasps the earth
and the moonbeams kiss the sea:
what is all this sweet work worth
if thou kiss not me?
